Teeth Whitening

It’s easy to forget just how important something like the appearance of your teeth is in everyday life. People actually make a lot of decisions based on this, often without even realizing it.

What’s the Procedure?

Teeth whitening procedures come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. In general, they involve sitting in the dentist’s chair while they insert a tray filled with special gel. This gel then whitens your teeth over a period of time. Sometimes they will want to monitor this in the beginning to see if any changes need to be made to your tray, but most of the time, after the initial procedure, you will be able to do the rest yourself.

For example, sometimes the dentist will give you a tray filled with the special gel so you can insert it yourself. You may wear it throughout the day, depending on whether you can do this or not, or else you may have to put it in at night so the whitening can work throughout the day.

In some other procedures, this may involve strips instead. Sometimes a dentist will also recommend that you use special toothpaste. The main approach involves taking off stains.

Bleach Approaches

One example involves using bleach to change the color your teeth currently have to the shade that you want. These approaches can change your teeth up to 6 or 7 shades brighter than what it’s at now. This includes both the in-office procedure and the procedure that you take at home with the ray. The most common ingredient to use for this is carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. The concentration for this active ingredient can be as high as 20% or higher.

Often, the mouthpiece you use for this has to be custom made. This can sometimes cost as much as hundreds of dollars due to the fact that the piece has to be molded to fit in your mouth specifically. The material will be heated up so that when you bite down, a perfect impression is made. This is key in order to make sure that you don’t feel uncomfortable later on. This is because you are basically wearing a perfect mold of your teeth. This is the important part of the procedure. The other parts can often be done at home for follow up.

Over the Counter Approaches

You can also get over the counter approaches for this. They are called “boil and bite” because you boil the plastic model that you get to make it soft, then bite down on it in order to get an impression. While you can do this without a dentist, there are usually a lot of downsides to this approach. For example, you just aren’t going to get the same level of precision that you get with other molds that the dentist can use for you if you go to the dentist’s in person.

Teeth Whitening Without Bleach

There are also a number of approaches that let you get your teeth more the color that you want that don’t use bleach at all. One interesting approach involves color mixing. For example, if you have teeth that are starting to look yellow, you can instead add purple coloration to your teeth. By using the principles of the color wheel, purple plus yellow will yield white. This way, you don’t have to use chemicals that some people think of as too harsh. Some kinds of toothpaste are also sometimes used in order to get rid of external stains present on your teeth. This is done through an abrasion method.

Benefits of Teeth Whitening

Some of the benefits of teeth whitening include having an increase in confidence and an increase in how you interact with others at your place of work and in your life in general. Although the changes are largely cosmetic, it’s important to not underestimate how important this can be to your general well-being and how you feel about yourself. People often make unconscious judgments about other people based on how they look, that’s the truth.

You won’t ever know exactly why you think the way you think necessarily, but the appearance of someone’s smile can often influence your feeling about them in one direction or another.

How to Prepare for Whitening Procedures

In most cases, there’s not a lot you need to do in order to prepare for a whitening procedure other than keeping your teeth clean. This will be important since you have to put the trays in or otherwise have gel or cream applied and you want a clean surface to work with as much as possible in order for the procedure to work out properly.
